Missing Personsw/ Bow Wow Wow and Midway Genre: Rock142 Pacific Coast Hwy,Hermosa Beach, CA 9025421+ Only Missing Persons: Famed as much for their video-ready space-age image as for their music, the Los Angeles-based New Wave outfit Missing Persons formed in 1980, a year after the marriage of singer Dale Bozzio and her drummer husband Terry. A onetime member of Frank Zappa’s backing band, Terry Bozzio met the former Dale Consalvi (an ex-Playboy Bunny) at a Hollywood recording studio; after founding Missing Persons — initially dubbed U.S. Drag — the couple recruited fellow Zappa alumni Warren Cuccurullo on guitar and Patrick O’Hearn on bass, and with classically-trained keyboardist Chuck Wild in tow, they began playing area clubs. In 1981, the band released its self-titled debut EP; after signing to Capitol, the label reissued the record in 1982, and the singles “Words” and “Destination Unknown” both nearly hit the Top 40. Their videos also helped Missing Persons find success on the fledgling MTV network, where Dale Bozzio’s hiccuping voice and campy look (comprised of shocking-pink hair and sci-fi outfits capped off with Plexiglass bras) combined with the group’s synth-driven songs to make them naturals for heavy rotation. Bow Wow Wow are a very funky, dynamic, and innovative early 80s New Wave rock band from London, England. The group was formed by former Sex Pistols’ manager Malcolm McLaren in 1980. The original band members were Annabella Lwin (vocals), Matthew Ashman (guitar), Leigh Gorman (bass) and David Barbarossa (drums). Bow Wow Wow were renowned in their 80s heyday for their wild Mohawk haircuts, Lwin’s extremely fierce, yet still sexy singing, and their highly distinctive savage Latin/African tribal rhythms. The band scored a Top 10 UK radio hit in February, 1982 with the stirring “Go Wild in the Country”. The group had their biggest international smash with their ferociously catchy and trashy rendition of “I Want Candy” in May, 1982 (this particular song was originally done by the The Strangeloves in 1965). “I Want Candy” peaked at #7 on the UK pop charts. Although “I Want Candy” didn’t do well on the US Billboard pop radio charts, it has nonetheless become a much beloved and popular 80s New Wave rock favorite in the United States because the music video for the song was heavily played on MTV.
